What Is A CT Scan?
Computed Tomography is an imaging procedure
that uses special x-ray equipment to obtain three dimensional
pictures of the body.
CAT scan or computerized axial tomography is
another term used for the same procedure.
Contrast agents are used to provide more acute
visibility of the images taken.

CT at GMC
The new SOMATOM CT provides high performance
imaging capabilities for the finest image quality
while reducing radiation exposure to the patient. The
SOMATOM Sensation Open has a larger gantry
opening compared to other CT scanners. This
allows scanning of virtually all patients regardless of
their size and provides optimal patient comfort by
eliminating the closed-in feeling, which patients
sometimes associate with CT scanning.
Our new CT scanners multi-slice CT imaging on a
routine basis leads to more accurate diagnosis while
also reducing examination time. It allows us to take
care of our patients in the best way and in a patient
friendly environment. |

Preparing For Your CT
To ensure optimal results are obtained, your
cooperation is required. Talk with your physician
about how to prepare for your examination.
A few general tips:
- CT of head and neck: please remove all jewelry,
hairpins, eyeglasses, hearing aids and dentures
or leave them at home.
- CT of the abdominal: please ask your physician
how many hours prior to the exam you should
refrain from eating or drinking.
- It is very important to let your physician know if you have had previous allergic reactions to a contrast medium or iodine or if you have asthma.
- If you have diabetes or take medication: Please
inform the Technologist.
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.

What To Expect?
During the examination you will be lying on a
comfortable patient table (usually on your back).
This table will then slowly move you through the
opening of the examination unit called the gantry.
Your CT Technologist will give you instructions, if
necessary.
As with conventional X-ray examinations, you will
not feel the acquisition of CT images at all; you will
only hear a low whirring noise. The patient table will
move slightly during the entire examination. The
detailed images produced by the CT aid the
radiologist in diagnosing the presence or absence of
disease in your body.
