The Latest CT Scanner Technology

ImageGwinnett Medical Center is committed to transforming healthcare, which is why we invest in the latest technologies, allowing us to make better, more accurate diagnoses and provide more effective treatments.

Our Siemens SOMATOM® Definition Edge CT scanner with the revolutionary Stellar Detector helps us provide our patients with the best care possible. It offers high-quality images with less radiation exposure.* It’s also among the fastest scanners available, cutting scan time by half. And GMC’s emergency department is the first to offer the Definition Edge technology in its Level II trauma center.

This CT scanner makes advanced imaging diagnosis available to more patients than ever, including:

  • Bariatric—Can make CT diagnosis available to bariatric patients. Standard CT scanners can have size and power limitations that prevent doctors from being able to scan obese patients or result in poor image quality.
  • Cancer—Allows oncologists to view organs in motion, not just as still cross-sections, helping them detect smaller tumors, precisely determine the extent of the cancer and see potential metastases. The Definition Edge scanner also helps us plan pinpoint-accurate radiation therapy and determine whether cancer is responding to treatment. And because it works in real time, it can help guide biopsies and surgeries while also reducing radiation dosage by up to 68%.
  • Cardiovascular—Provides cardiologists with details of the whole heart, brain and blood flow through the veins and arteries, including views in motion from all angles. This helps to reduce invasive procedures and time to diagnoses, and can speed treatment of cardiovascular disease in its earliest stages. It can also help precisely guide complex procedures, such as stent placement, making them safer for patients.
  • Stroke—Allows visualization of the whole brain and blood flow from all angles in real time. It produces exceptional image quality and sharpness, so doctors can see veins and arteries with incredible clarity. This allows for faster, more reliable diagnoses that can limit brain damage and even save lives.

GMC also uses the Siemens Combined Applications to Reduce Exposure (CARE) 4D dose reduction technology in order to give patients access to a full range of diagnostic imaging services with less radiation exposure. The CARE 4D radiation exposure control system adjusts the radiation dose in real time according to the area of the body being scanned. Combined with the SOMATOM Definition Edge Scanner, the CARE 4D system allows GMC to provide patients with improved diagnostic accuracy with less risk.
